He awoke and for a moment wondered why everything felt different. The plain chamber in the Houses of Healing was the same, as was the dull ache in his shoulder.

Then he recalled the Eagle’s message: the Dark Lord was overthrown, the King was coming and the City would be blessed.

He had longed all his life for peace, but never dreamed to see it. Where there had been darkness and dread was now light and hope.

Gondor would flourish under her new lord, the same who had given him life. He loved the fairest of ladies; Faramir’s future was bright.

She went to the coronation only to please her granddaughter. Young folks still had faith in new kings and suchlike. She knew better; leaders were all alike, feasting off the fat of the land while they sent the young men off to fight and die. This Elessar would be no different than Lord Denethor.

Our new Lord turned to face this people. Radiance surrounded him. He was old yet young, his hands a warrior’s yet healer's too, and the light of wisdom shone in his eyes. Such majesty needed no crown. This man was different; he was truly the King returned.

During the standing silence, Aragorn found his thoughts wandering to Mettarë celebrations of his youth, spent with his mother and Lord Elrond and his sons. What feasts there had been then!

Mettarë as a Ranger had been very different; often he had shared meagre rations beside a campfire with Halbarad or been far away from home. Bittersweet, those memories of friends now long gone.

His gaze lighted on his lady, their children and his best friend. Joy filled his heart. It was not the feasts that he recalled but the loving companionship of those with whom he had shared them.

The four men huddled around the campfire sharing their meagre rations.

“Would that I had gold to buy a decent meal,” said one.

“I’d buy a silver bracelet for my daughter,” said another.

“My sweetheart deserves gemstones to adorn her slender neck,” said the third. “What about you, Captain?”

“My beloved needs no gold, silver or gems to adorn her,” Thorongil replied. ”She is fairer than the stars. In my dreams I gladly lay a kingdom at her feet.”

The others laughed. Thorongil had wild dreams for a captain.

Long after his companions slept, Thorongil sat gazing at the stars.

Arathorn slumped down by the hearth and wearily tugged at his boots. He sighed. The Orcs were growing bolder by the day. He had lost another good man while driving them away from the village.

His lady hastened to his side, bringing wine to refresh him. He greeted her with a tired smile.

Then like a whirlwind, a little boy emerged from the inner chamber. His face alight with joy, Aragorn cried “Ada!” and laughed as he scrambled happily onto his father’s lap..

Arathorn’s face lit up. “Our child has a merry heart indeed, Gilraen. Long may it continue so!”
