“There are so many things!” Eldarion gazed wide eyed at the market.

“Naneth will love whatever you choose,” Aragorn reassured him.

“Maybe I can be of assistance?” Ambassador Tahir approached from the Harad quarter. “I will show you my lady’s favourite stall.”

Almost hidden in a corner was a tiny table presided over by an ancient dark skinned merchant. On it were trays piled high with exquisite wares.

“I like this.” Eldarion chose a necklace of silver filigree adorned with tiny roses.

Tahir bade the merchant wrap a brightly enamelled dish with the necklace. “A gift of friendship,” he smiled.

“My people speak highly of this tavern,” said the Ambassador as he settled at a table together with Gondor’s Steward and King.

While they waited for refreshments, the ring on Aragorn’s finger caught his eye.

“This is an ancient heirloom of my House,” said Aragorn following his gaze. “It has passed from father to son for generations, signifying the friendship between Elves and Men.”

“How wondrous to have such treasures for your heirs!”

“We have an even greater treasure to bequeath our sons,” said Faramir. “The greatest legacy that any father can give. We have won peace for our children.”

A/n I am aware that Aragorn gave Arwen the Ring of Barahir when they were betrothed, but my personal belief is that when they were married he gave her a more suitable ring that would fit her and openly wore the Ring of Barahir.

“Arwen would look beautiful in that scarlet silk,” said Aragorn. “The blue would suit her too and the violet.”

Beside him, Faramir seemed almost dazzled by the multitude of jewel bright hues. “Éowyn would look fair in a gown of green silk, or turquoise. I will take the red too, and the deep blue, and the gold to match her hair.

Ambassador Tahir chuckled. “Have a care, my friends, or you will need to borrow a camel to deliver your purchases to your ladies!”

Faramir walked through the City streets, accompanied by Tahir, the Ambassador from Harad.

Tahir espied a peddler selling delicacies made of marzipan. “I will buy these for my children,” he said.

“I don’t sell to outlanders,” said the peddler.

“His coin is as good as mine,” said Faramir.

“His kind killed my brother,” said the man.

“I lost a beloved brother too in the war,” said Faramir. “So did the Ambassador.”

“To sell to the likes of him would be like dancing on my brother’s grave,” said the peddler.

He spat on the ground, turned his back and walked away.

Eldarion got up and whispered in his father’s ear. “I need sufficient coin for a gift for Naneth.”

Aragorn hugged him. “That is an easy decision. You shall go with nanny to choose it tomorrow.”

“You could always borrow some of my robes and return to the stall disguised,” Ambassador Tahir joked. ”Our merchants simply crave the honour of doing business with such great men.”

“Fame and wealth has its disadvantages,” sighed Aragorn. “I miss my Ranger days.”

“We have advantages too,” said Faramir. “I could despatch a servant to buy a whole box of combs for Éowyn and whatever your lady might desire too.”
