“I’ll pull these weeds up, my lord.”  The gardener regarded the patch of long leaved plants with horror.

“No, leave them be,” Faramir said firmly.

“But, my lord,” the gardener protested. “You cannot let weeds flourish in your garden!”

“Do you not know what that plant is?” asked Faramir. “It is athelas, the noblest thing that grows! The King himself used it to save me from the Black Breath. Athelas in his healing hands  restored life to my lady and I.”

“But it is a weed, my lord!”

“And I say it is the most precious thing in my garden.”

“Ouch!” Faramir raised a bleeding finger to his lips and surveyed the brambles ruefully.

“Why don’t you ask the gardeners to do that, sir?” asked Beregond, who was passing.

Faramir laughed. “An old warrior can hardly complain over a pricked finger! The King gave me this land and I would liefer tame her myself. Did you never gather blackberries as a child, Beregond, and proudly show off your wounds, little knowing what was to come? How happy I am that now I fight thorns rather than men and can learn how to wield a sickle as deftly as a sword!”

Faramir stood in the doorway watching the rain. How he hated it as a child! He recalled being unable to play outside with Boromir and cancelled walks and picnics.

He liked rain little better when he became a Ranger. He smiled ruefully at memories of tramping through the mud, soaked to the skin.

Everything had changed, now he farmed here in Ithilien. The raindrops gushing from the heavens were a precious gift sent to nourish his growing crops.

Faramir stepped outside. He lifted up his face to the heavens. As the cool water drenched his skin, he laughed for joy.

“What are you sowing?” Damrod asked Faramir.

“Poppy seeds, a gift from Ambassador Tahir,” Faramir replied.

“You would plant seeds from Harad in good Ithilien soil?” Damrod asked in horror.

“We should have a fine crop from them to use to flavour our food or make medicines to relieve pain ,” said Faramir.

“I know they have their uses, but the Haradrim spilled Gondorian blood on this soil!”

Faramir held up his hand and let the tiny seeds trickle through his fingers. “Far better to sow the seeds of peace than to see the blood of more good men spilled.”

“The harvest is even better than I dared hope for,” said Faramir. As far as the eye could see the fields of wheat stretched, while vivid poppies and cornflowers flourished amidst the swollen ears of grain. “I have so much to be thankful for. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect such bounty.”

“You defied your father’s decree and helped the Hobbits, recognised my rightful claim to the throne, comforted  Lady Éowyn in her sorrow, and now you have your well- deserved reward,” said the King. ““You sowed wisely and now you will reap the fruits of your labours.”

The field was almost ready for planting. Faramir was pleased how quickly the farm he had always dreamed of was progressing.

King and Steward paused to watch the harrow breaking up the weeds and clumps of earth, leaving the good Ithilien soil in its wake.

“Life is like this,” Faramir said thoughtfully. “Our troubles can break us, yet make us stronger. We are the fields in which our experiences take root and grow.”

“Few have been harrowed as much as you, my friend,” said Aragorn. “May you and Éowyn thrive and prosper as the seed you plant here surely will.”

“It is a wilderness!” Éowyn regarded the tangled thorns and thistles in dismay.

“We can make a garden here,” said Faramir. “And a farm. The land has great potential to yield a bountiful harvest.”

A year later, Éowyn, together with the whole household stood in the same place. The land was now cleared and the ploughman stood ready with his team.

“May Yavanna bless us with her fruits!” cried Faramir. He poured out wine upon the earth as libation.

The lead horse snorted, impatient to begin.

Faramir walked beside the horses as the plough cut furrows into the rich earth.
