My story about pets is certainly different from anyone else's. *g*

30-some years ago I worked in school that stood in a part of the city considered not very nice. In one of my groups, consisting of kids that were several years behind the grade there should have been, due to having repeated a year or more because of poor performance, one of them asked me:
"Do you have any pets, Miss?"
Before I could have answered, another one prompted: "She doesn't need any; she's got us!"

And that was it - has been to the current day. I seriously doubt that I'd have the energy left for any live-in pets, but I still love my pupils very much. They are loud, unruly, boisterous, sometimes disrespectful, but also funny, loving, adorable and great fun to be with.
