In truth, whether intended or not, there's a good deal of his "fey"ness showing here. Fara does tend to run in mental and emotional circles and think things that, to anyone else, would sound ridiculous!
In many ways your Faramir (and probably Tolkien's original) are like the duck in the pond: swimming serenely on the surface while his feet are paddling like mad below. :)
