The Ranger and the Hobbit walked away from Cerin Amroth hand in hand. Frodo marvelled at what he had briefly glimpsed. Why Aragorn had looked almost like a young Elf lord! Now Aragorn seemed sad and weary; as if the weight of Middle-earth lay upon his shoulders.

“What troubles you, Strider?" Frodo asked, squeezing the Man's hand in comfort.

“I cherish a dream that I may never achieve,” said Aragorn. “And I know that I shall not walk this way again. “But my burdens are light compared to yours, my friend.”

“Gandalf once told me that we must use well the time that was given to us,” Frodo replied.

“So he would often tell me,” answered Aragorn. “He also said that I must never lose hope.”

Just then a beaming Pippin came running towards them. “I've just seen the cook!” he cried. “Guess what? There are mushrooms for dinner! Great big juicy ones too, just like those that grow in the Shire!”

“That sounds wonderful!” said Frodo, his melancholy forgotten.

Aragorn laughed. It was difficult to stay sorrowful in the presence of hobbits. Perhaps Pippin’s mushrooms were a hopeful omen. Aragorn sometimes suspected that the Valar had a sense of humor.
