The roses bloomed early in Gondor, a profusion of blossoms in pink and white, and released a headier perfume than those in the North. Or did he just fancy it so now that he could gather them freely for his beloved?

Ignoring the gardeners’ scandalised expressions, Aragorn carefully selected the finest blooms for his Queen. It was the least he could do for the one who had given him her all.

A sharp pain pierced his finger. He glanced down and saw the droplet of crimson blood. The roses were fair indeed, but each stem bore cruel thorns in plenty.

This is the perfect time to post this drabble - I'm just coming back from admiring the new buds of our rose on the balcony and couldn't help noticing while doing so how formidable her thorns are. ;-) Poor Aragorn - though I think that, just this once, he won't mind the thorns too much. Loved it! :)

This was sweet--I have found that flowers in southern climes smell sweeter, but perception is also part of everything. Very touching (even if it meant a minor injury!) for Aragorn to pick them himself.

A most touching drabble, and a great reminder that even beautiful things have their painful side. Trust Aragorn to see beauty and be reminded of sharing it with the one he loves.
