“Tell us a story, please,” the children begged Aragorn.

“What sort of story?” asked the King.

“A ghost story!” Eldarion demanded.

“I’m scared of ghosts!” Faramir’s small daughter protested, looking scared.

“There aren’t any!” Elfwine retorted with a superior air. ”Girls are such cowards!”

“Maybe then you would have gladly ridden with me along the Paths of the Dead and sought out the unquiet spirits that my ancestor had cursed?” said Aragorn. “Elestelle does well to beware of things that chill even a warrior’s blood!"

Elfwine crept closer to the others. “I don’t think I like ghosts,” he whimpered.

A/n. In this drabble(as in my stories) I imagine Eldarion and Elestelle as around the same age and Elfwine about a year younger. This concludes the "Pottery" series.

Eldarion sat cross-legged on the hearthrug, his dark head bowed over his task.

“What are you drawing, ion nîn?” Aragorn enquired.

“The White Tree and the symbols our friends use,” said the boy.

Aragorn inspected the picture of a White Tree, a horse and a coiled serpent.

“The coiled serpent?” he questioned.

“Why not? Ambassador Tahir and his family are our friends,” Eldarion replied.

Aragorn smiled, recalling the days when he had faced the serpent banner across a battlefield. Now Middle-earth had changed and for the better; the serpent was no longer poised to strike, but curled peacefully in slumber.

With thanks to Raksha.

The swords were wooden, but the combatants fought as if in deadly earnest, showing both skill and strength.

Arwen and Faramir stood watching the bout, calling out encouragement.

When Aragorn’s sword flew from his hand, Eldarion handed it back to his sire. When the King won the bout, they embraced.

“Another?” asked Aragorn. “It is your turn to beat me, son!”

“Not for a few years yet.” Eldarion grinned broadly. “On guard!”

Faramir turned to the Queen. "Fair- minded and bold alike. Those two are certainly cut from the same mould.”

“Who could fail to love them both?” Arwen replied.

Farawyn regarded the frozen lake Nenuial dubiously. Her brother was already sliding across the across the icy surface. Aragorn lingered at the edge. “Come on!” he coaxed. “Let us go skating. You will enjoy it once you try.”

“I am scared, ada,” said the little girl. “Will we not drown?”

“Girls!” snorted Eldarion.

Aragorn firmly grasped her hand. “You will not doubt slip and slither as you learn, child, but I will keep you safe.”

Farawyn held on tightly and tried her first tentative steps. By sunset she was gliding gracefully across the ice with her father, laughing in delight.

“I don’t want to ride my pony any longer!” cried Eldarion. “I want to ride Roheryn. I’m a big boy now! Ponies are for babies.”

“And Roheryn is a great horse that only a man can ride,” said Aragorn.” He has weathered many battles and will suffer only a seasoned warrior on his back.” As if to prove his master’s point, the mighty warhorse whinnied and reared, showing his great hooves.

“He would throw you,” Aragorn warned. “Then you would break a bone and be confined to your bed.”

“I think I will ride my pony after all,” said Eldarion.
