Arwen woke early and drew back the curtains. The morning sunlight streamed into the bedchamber. Exhausted after hard labours of the previous day, Aragorn still slept. Arwen had not the heart to rouse him. She climbed back into bed and lay beside him, studying his noble features in repose.

He stirred and smiled as if lost in pleasant dreams, oblivious to the sunbeams that played across his face.

He smiled often now; at her, his children and his people. Once his smiles were as rare as sunlight in midwinter. Summer had come now and he basked in its light and warmth.

Arwen supposed that the sun rose and set, the moon shone and stars still twinkled, but without Estel, she perceived them not. It were as if she dwelt in everlasting night, a deep darkness, which no light, however bright could penetrate. He had been her sun, her moon and her guiding star.

At last she came to Cerin Amroth and lay down and slept, embracing the darkness as friend, not foe.

Arwen opened her eyes and beheld a radiant dawn. Night was yielding to a glorious sunrise. Estel stood before her. He took her hand and darkness was forever banished.

Torches filled the Merethrond with glowing light, which together with the candles, illuminated the hall. Evergreens: holly, yew, pine, and mistletoe decorated the walls for the Mettarë feast, leafy boughs fresh scented as a forest glade.

Dancers swirled around the room, the ladies bright as blossoms in silks and glittering jewels.
“May I have this dance?”

She smiled and took his hand.

Oblivious to the splendour around him, Aragorn had eyes only for his lady. The gems adorning Arwen’s hair glittered in the torchlight. Swirling in her crimson gown, she seemed almost to glow, her smiling eyes brighter than stars.

Arwen walked slowly through the fragrant, starlit gardens, her heart heavy. There had been no tidings of Estel for months now. She could only wait and hope. She gazed up at the Star of Eärendil, twinkling brightly in the evening sky.“Watch over my love!” she pleaded.

000

Aragorn trudged wearily through the wilderness. In this place, even the stars seemed veiled. His thoughts turned to his beloved. Was she safe? How was she faring?

Suddenly the Star of Eärendil gleamed brightly through a gap in the clouds. Aragorn looked up “Greet my lady!” he whispered, new hope filling his heart.

Sometimes at twilight, he would find her gazing westwards. Then he would draw her close and try to console her for all she had lost; lost for his sake.

“I chose to renounce the twilight when we were troth plighted,” said Arwen.

“What do you see beyond the sunset?” he asked her.

“That our time here has ended,” she replied. “For does the sun not rise in the East? Our children seek the sun not the starlight.”

“The gift and hope of Men lies beyond sun moon and stars,” said Aragorn.

“And that is where I shall follow you, Estel.”

Arwen sat bent over her needlework, her lovely face illuminated by the warm glow of the lamp.

“What are you making?” Aragorn asked.

“A shirt for you, Estel. You wear them out so quickly!”

Aragorn was taken back to another time and another woman who had been the centre of his world. Long ago, Gilraen had sat making his shirts by lamplight too.

“You could ask the seamstress to make them.”

“I enjoy sewing them for you because I love you.”

His mother had said that too. Was ever a man more blessed than he to be so richly cherished?

Though he moved silently, she sensed his presence.

He stood before the fire, favouring its warmth over the chill of his dressing chamber. Her gaze delighted in his easy grace as he began to shed his clothing. He cast his shirt aside and for a moment stood there, his skin glowing like burnished bronze in the firelight.

Surely, her husband was fairer than any Elf! Arwen though. Her eyes drank in his beauty. The muscles of his broad back rippled beneath the fire illuminated skin before vanishing beneath his nightshirt.

“Estel?”

Aragorn slid into their bed and held her close.

Sprawled on the bed, Aragorn slumbered peacefully with their child clasped in his arms. Beside him lay Eldarion’s discarded storybook.

How noble were her husband’s features in repose! The broad brow and carven cheekbones now smoothed out by sleep, while the warm lips smiled as if lost in some pleasant dream.

How like his father was their son, who lay snuggled against his father’s heart, his young face as noble and as fair. The candlelight cast a soft glow on the features of the two Arwen loved most dearly. She took up the candle and silently crept from the chamber.

The gardens looked especially fair by moonlight. Aragorn often walked there before seeking his bed.

The varied scents of the spring blossoms fragranced the night air. Overhead soared a sweetly singing nightingale.

He came upon Arwen walking beside the roses, her slender form illuminated by the gentle glow of the full moon, while the gems in her hair twinkled like stars.

He plucked a perfect bud and offered it to her. She buried her face in its sweetness then raised her lips to meet his in a tender kiss. The moon seemed to smile as she melted into his embrace.
