Rivers and lakes, mountains and forest, towns and villages, orchards and farms stretching as far as the eye could see. Despite the ravages of war, Gondor was still most fair. The realm of his forefathers was now for him and his descendants to rule over and cherish.

Cradling the precious sapling, Aragorn looked at Gandalf, questions still in his eyes.

“Your line is that of Lúthien, Elessar,” said the Wizard. “It will never fail so long as Men live and breathe and Arda endures. Your descendants will be like the stars in the heavens or the sand upon the shore.”

“It is one of my duties and greatest joys as Chieftain to welcome each new babe into our family. May the stars forever light this child’s path!”

Aragorn pronounced the ritual blessing on Halbarad’s third son and then handed the baby back to his proud parents. Once the feast was underway he left the company and stood alone under the frosty starlit sky.

“You must find this hard. I know how you yearn for a wife and children.”

“It is, Halbarad. But maybe when Arda is safe for all our children, I will at last be granted my heart’s desire.”

Faramir considered himself the most fortunate of men. He was married to the fairest of ladies, was father to children he adored, and served a King whom he loved and admired.

Yet when the King of Rohan came to visit Éowyn, or the Elven twins Elladan and Elrohir came to call upon the King, sometimes he would grow sad and a far away look come into his eyes.

Perceiving his sorrow, Aragorn said “How you must miss Boromir! I grew up wishing I had a sister or brother.”

Then Faramir pitied his lord. He had known a brother’s love once.

“Meet your little sister,” said Arwen. “Is she not most fair?”

Eldarion regarded the wailing bundle in his mother’s arms without enthusiasm. "I thought you said I might have a little brother to play with,” he said glumly. “I don’t like girls!”

“A sister will need you to take care of her and will not want to borrow your toys like a brother would,” said Arwen.

“Neither will she want to fishing or camping with me when she is older,” said Aragorn, smiling at his son.

Eldarion considered the matter. Maybe having a sister would not be so bad after all.

“Family life has worked marvels for my son,” Ecthelion remarked to his favourite Captain. The two sat together on a bench in the Citadel gardens enjoying the spring sunshine.

On the greensward opposite, Denethor was playing with his toddler son, smiling broadly at Boromir’s babyish prattle, tenderly picking him up when he stumbled, and carrying the child when his little legs tired of walking.

Thorongil regarded his the other man somewhat wistfully, wondering if such joy would ever be his. It seemed the Steward’s haughty heir had a heart after all. For all his faults, Denethor was a wonderful father.

Marriage had not restrained her. Her husband knew better than to try. She warned him he was wedding a warrior maiden and she had no intent of changing.

When the healers told her that she must no longer gallop across the fields on Widfola’s back she was resentful, even angry at the child growing within her.

But when Éowyn held her firstborn to her breast, the last slithers of ice within her heart melted. No longer did she thirst for glory and battles, nor restlessly roam the house.

Now a happily contented mother, the wild shieldmaiden was tamed at last.

The first birthday of Arathorn’s heir was celebrated by a visit from his grandparents.

Gilraen proudly showed them her son.

At first Aragorn regarded them with a puzzled expression. The child then bestowed a sunny smile upon the visitors and gurgled happily.

“He tried to say “Grandma,” Ivorwen beamed. “I foresee he will be wise.”

“How strong the lad is: soon he will be wielding a sword!” said Dírhael.

Gilraen shuddered. “He is but a babe!” she protested.

“Time alone will decide his future,” said Ivorwen. “For now let us rejoice we can visit our grandson and watch him grow.”
