Never had she felt so weary and yet so blissful. Every emotion she had felt before today, seemed but a pale shadow of what she was experiencing now

The babe in her arms was the most perfect being she had ever beheld. Every fibre of her being was filled with love for her daughter, a love that welled inside her with almost painful intensity.

She would now live for this child, gladly die for her, or even kill for her.
Galadriel caressed the infant’s silver hair. The child whimpered fretfully.“Hush, Celebrian, no harm shall ever befall you,” she murmured.

A/n. I don't usually write Silmarillion stories ,but felt inspired to create this for the SWG 10th birthday with a little help from the prompt generator.

Theme: Bunny Hutch LOTRGFIC Challenge.
Elements: . I've often wondered if Eowyn truly wanted Faramir or if she always pined for Aragorn but realized he wasn't to be hers, so settled for Faramir as a poor second choice. (Erulisse (one L))
Author's Notes: These drabbles are closely linked to my treatment of Faramir and Eowyn in other stories in my sub universe. The drabbles contain direct references to Tolkien.
Summary: Still Pining for Aragorn, Eowyn accepts Faramir's proposal.

I
Faramir looked longingly at her, eyes alight with love. Éowyn accepted his proposal, yet her heart yearned for another. Aragorn loved her not, though, while Faramir did. Faramir was a good man. He would treat her kindly. Never would he confine her to a cage.
He even looked like Aragorn, tall and stern with sparkling grey eyes. Éowyn could do far worse. She would try to make him a good wife. She hoped her heart would no longer flutter wildly whenever Aragorn was near.

What else could she do? Return home and keep house for her brother until he wed?

II

The man she had loved had spoken of her as a fair thing given to Faramir by her brother. She hated him now with a burning rage that consumed her day and night. Yet were love and hate not close kin, mingled as the twin consuming passions?

She even doubted Faramir now. Did he truly love her or had he only wed her to spare the King embarrassment now that his Elven bride was here?

Faramir treated her respectfully, too respectfully, for he shunned her bed. Maybe he knew all too well that he was only her second choice.

III

When they at last come together, ice met with fire. His heat thawed her frost. She melted into his arms and at last, she loved him as he loved her. She knew now his love was no courtly pretext. They had both passed through darkest shadows into the sun.

When he held their child, his eyes beheld her with adoration and gratitude.
“Beloved!” he whispered and kissed her.

She returned his kiss, her heart overflowing. Faramir was truly a Prince amongst men. Éowyn was now the happiest of wives, free to be her own mistress as well as Faramir’s lady.

IV

The years pass until one day Faramir asks her, “Do you still feel love for Aragorn, by far the greatest man who lives?”

She can laugh now at that ill- starred infatuation. “I love him still, even as you love him, my husband,” she replies. “Do not all who see the King come to love him? He is my friend as he is yours.”

She knows now there are many kinds of love, equally deep and true; that of wife, mother, sister and friend. For Faramir alone she feels the love that makes her heart quicken when she beholds him.

“You have a letter, sister.”

Éowyn tore open the seal. It was from Merry. “I have waited long to hear these tidings, Éomer. Wormtongue is dead at the hand of a Hobbit archer.”

“Praise Bema! You are avenged for all the sorrows that he caused you. Would that the snake had died at my hand, though!”

Éowyn regarded her brother thoughtfully. “Once, I would have danced for joy at the news. Now, I feel uncertain. Merry tells me that he slew Sauraman just before he fell.”

“He died better than he lived,” said Éomer. “I say good riddance to them both!”

“Do something, you fool!”

The healer shook his head sadly. “Your lady is beyond all mortal aid, my lord.”

Denethor blanched and for a few moments stood as if turned to stone. “My sons must be told,” he said at last.

They came and regarded the still figure upon the vast bed.

“Is Naneth asleep?” asked Faramir.

“She has gone to be with Grandfather Ecthelion,” Boromir explained, valiantly struggling not to cry.

“Can’t you bring her home, ada?” Faramir sobbed. He stared at his father with Finduilas’ sea- grey eyes.

Unable to meet the child’s innocent gaze, Denethor silently turned away.

She is wondrous fair, surpassing any maiden I have ere beheld. Her hair is like spun gold, her eyes shimmer like twin stars and she moves with lithe grace.

Éowyn! She stirs my heart strangely. I know not why this this should be. Maybe it is because our future is so uncertain. Her beauty is like a flame illuminating the darkness that threatens us all. Maybe her sorrow draws me to her, as I sense something within her that mirrors my own heaviness of heart. We were both wounded, both saved from death by the same hand, and we both mourn.

I know too another sorrow burdens her heart. She loves the Lord Aragorn who loves her not. A tragedy indeed that a maid should offer her love to one who cannot accept it. I would count myself  the most fortunate of men should she turn her affections towards me.

I would comfort her. What joy it would be to see her smile and hear the sound of her laughter.
Éowyn! I was first drawn to ease your sorrow, but now I know that I love you. My heart is now in your keeping. I would make you my wife!

Summary: Faramir lives though a fateful year

Rating: PG

Author's Notes: A set of four drabbles. This was my second choice of prompt to sign up for, so I thought I'd write it anyway.

Autumn came early that fateful year, without its habitual blaze of colour. The leaves turned brown and withered ere October was out, blighted by Mordor’s  foul poisons. With every day that passed, Faramir’s heart grew heavier, while his father’s mood grew ever darker. The weeks passed, and with them, their hope, for no news of Boromir reached Minas Tirith.

“It was a fool’s errand,” Denethor said darkly.

“It should have been mine,” Faramir replied.

“I would not have your head turned further with riddles,” said the Steward.

A cold wind blew through the Citadel as the year approached its ending.

0000

It was a hard winter. The sun rarely broke through the leaden skies while the east wind chilled the bones of the Ithilien Rangers.

Mettarë passed without mirth. Boromir’s absence was keenly felt by all.

One February night, Faramir beheld his brother once more. He hardly knew whether he were in the world of dreaming or waking when the funeral boat glided past his eyes ‘neath the silver moon and twinkling stars.

Real though, without doubt, was the cloven horn yielded up by the river. Darkest dreams became reality. Faramir wept, as did his father. They did not weep together.

0000

Spring brought no relief. The very earth seemed blighted by the Shadow’s tightening grip. Denethor sat silent, the shattered horn held in his hands. The Enemy struck hard and fast. An arrow felled Faramir. His father fell by fire. All hope seemed forsaken.

Then Hope returned, Elendil’s heir borne of the wind from the sea. A star shone upon his brow and healing was in his hands.

Faramir awoke from deathly slumber and recognised his King. Reborn, with strength renewed, he dared again to dream.

Eagles sang the yearned for tidings. The Ring was destroyed and with it, Sauron’s might.

0000

Summer rushed in, riotous in green and gold array. Sunlight bathed Gondor in a golden glow of endless days. Life sprung up abundantly, birds sang in every blossom- laden tree. Faramir too found abundance, the fairest maiden’s hand, a princely diadem and Gondor’s rod of rule.

The King had returned, the summer king, the Renewer. The White Tree bloomed again and Faramir walked beneath it, inhaling the scent of sweet blossoms carried on the western breeze.

Boromir would not return, but the land he loved would flourish. Faramir was well content to walk beneath the unshadowed sun with his lady.

Summary: Gilraen finds a lost treasure.

Author's Notes: For Litlover12. As you did not specify a prompt I used one you entered in the prompt contest. Hope you enjoy it.

"Arathorn was noble and brave, a truly great man," Gilraen said wistfully. "Long have I yearned to speak of him. He would have been so proud of you."

"Do you have any of his possessions?" asked Aragorn. "I should like to hold something that was once his."

"I have only a few things that I was able to snatch up when we left our village in haste. That wooden horse that you always liked was your father's."

Aragorn smiled.

"I still have his sword. It should be yours to wield now, my son." Gilraen unlocked an oaken chest beside her bed and lifted out a cloth wrapped bundle, which she handed to her son.

Aragorn took it reverently. "I shall endeavour to always bear this blade with honour," he said. He carefully unwrapped the sword, freeing it from its dusty shroud. As he did so, a gleaming metal object fell to the floor.

Gilraen bent to retrieve it. "Well I never!" she exclaimed. "Your father gave me this brooch when we were wed. It pure mithril. How I cherished it, but I feared it was lost forever. I was not laid eyes on it for almost twenty years!"

"It gladdens my heart your treasure is restored to you, mother," said Aragorn. "My father gave you a precious gift indeed."

"The brooch was but a foretaste of the treasure beyond price that Arathorn later gave me."

"What jewel was that?"

"Why you, of course, Aragorn!" Gilraen smiled lovingly at her son.
