Faramir had laughed when he heard his comrades boast that the earth had moved for them the night before. Surely the ground could not appear to shake, however enchanting the intimacies of marriage might be?

No longer an innocent, but now a happily married man, he discovered his fellows had but hinted at the delights he was now privileged to enjoy.

Faramir  awoke at dawn and turned to gaze at his  peacefully sleeping wife. A smile played on his lips when he recalled the blissful night before. Not only had the earth moved, it had shaken in a veritable earthquake!

By day she filled his thoughts. Nightly she would visit him in dreams and he would enjoy her caresses. Phantom like, she vanished with the sunrise, leaving him aching, in body and soul alike.

There were women in plenty who were eager to satisfy his every need, but Aragorn heeded them not. He would have Arwen or forever walk alone, though their brief meetings provided but meagre crumbs.

Still Aragorn lived in hope. After so long a famine, surely a feast would follow? Not that his need for Arwen would ever be sated through they be wed a hundred years.

Nine had set out, now only three remained. Boromir lay dead beside him, and who knew what fate had befallen the Hobbits?

Aragorn wept. For Boromir, for Gandalf, for the Hobbits, for his hopes and dreams, now as broken as the fellowship. The tears overwhelmed him, falling in a great flood across Boromir’s lifeless features.

Legolas’ and Gimli’s words roused him to his senses. Aragorn released Boromir’s hand and rose to his feet. The time for tears was past. They would consign Boromir to the river; allow the flood to bear him away. Aragorn would fight to save the Hobbits.

As far as the eye could see the earth lay parched and cracked. Leaves withered on stubby trees, rivers became dry chasms and the grass was long since shrivelled.

Aragorn lifted his water bottle to his parched lips and took a few sips of the precious liquid.

He closed his eyes and thought longingly of his northern homeland where the grass grew green and the rivers flowed abundantly.

He scooped up a handful of dust and let it trickle through his fingers. In the heart of Sauron’s realm there was nought but dust and ashes.

One day rain must fall.

The City was burning. Denethor’s City, which he was born and bred to rule over. Fire consumed the stones, flesh of his flesh and bone of his bones, burning, burning!

Water had taken his son and heir, Boromir the beloved; fire from within now consumed the other.

There were worse things than fire. Flames have no malice. In their dance of destruction, they swiftly consume their prey.

He would embrace the fire and die the slave of none.

Let flames take him and Faramir too! Earth, air, fire and water; all would become one. Fire would purify and grant release.
